Vintage fashion photography

Last month in addition to family portraiture I did lots of work for my favourite long-term client, Campbell/Crafts Vintage, a boutique selling high-end vintage reproduction fashions from around the world.

One of the best things about being freelance is being able to choose to only work with people that you get on with. Lindsay, owner of Campbell/Crafts, and I have a lot in common and every time we work together we have loads to talk about and spend lots of time catching up.

I love the variety of working with them. Last month I photographed Lindsay’s diner dresses on a mannequin in my studio, which meant I could listen to my own music as loudly as I like and really get into it. I also went to the 1940s Relived event at Brooklands Museum to photograph the vintage airstream that they take to events. That was quite an experience: set in post-war Paris there were people in meticulous military uniform marching around with guns and a display of vintage cameras that fascinated me.

The main work I did for them last month was a photo shoot with the singing sisters from My Favourite Things wearing a range of Campbell/Crafts clothes at their showroom. The girls were great to work with, there was amazing, gravity-defying vintage hair from Hair That Turns Heads and beautiful make up from Catherine Bailey, and I got to have a proper play with my new octa softbox, which is even better than I hoped it would be. I also got see all of the new season stock and, as always, ended up buying a couple of things for myself – being around such lovely clothes all day is quite dangerous.

New Year’s Eve Wedding

I just wanted to share some pictures from the wedding that I photographed on New Year’s Eve. Despite the weather it was a fantastic day. The bride and groom and their families and friends made me feel very welcome. I had the most helpful group of ushers ever, which meant I could concentrate on the photographs rather than running around looking for people. There was also the cutest and most photogenic group of flower girls that I have had the pleasure of photographing. Both venues were great and I would especially like to mention the staff at Woodlands Park Hotel  who really went out of their way to help with the challenges of photographing inside due to the rain.

All this and I finished in time to go out myself for New Years’ Eve – a satisfying days work.

Pop-up studio in Streatham.

On Monday 18th November I will be hosting a pop-up photographic studio downstairs at Serendipity Tea Room, 241-243 Streatham High Road, London SW16 6EN. This is a great opportunity to get photographic portraits of your family that could be used as Christmas presents, without the expense of paying a session fee.

The pop up studio will run from 2.30pm –5pm and there is no need to book, simply turn up.

There will be a viewing session two weeks later on Monday 2nd December from 3pm-4.30pm where you can order prints and view examples of different products (although if you cannot make this you will be able to view the images online).

As a special Christmas offer standard prints will be available from £10. Framed prints, canvas prints, digital files and photo books will also be available.

See examples of my work or to contact me with any questions.

Babywearing exhibition-2

Babywearing exhibition review.

I’ve now had a little time to reflect on the busy and enjoyable week of my babywearing exhibition.

On Saturday the exhibition opened with some delicious lemon drizzle cupcakes from Anne of Toast & Butter. By lunchtime most of the people in the photos had come to see themselves and it was lovely for me to see how much some of the children had grown since I photographed them. Maria Yasnova from La Leche League brought a large selection of books and leaflets and gave advice on breastfeeding, while Virginia Carrington led an informal discussion on “good enough” parenting, which developed into a very interesting dialogue on different approaches to schooling.

Sunday was horribly wet and I was concerned that no one would come to the talks, but many people braved the rain and we had a great turnout. Clare Caro of Nature Play gave a really interesting talk about infant brain development, offering a biological and scientific view of attachment parenting. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to sit and listen to all of it, as I was busy making lots of cups of tea to warm everyone up from the cold. This was followed by John Graves, who gave a passionate and persuasive psychological perspective on attachment parenting including how it can help your children develop emotional intelligence (and even managed to mention Marx). By this point many of the toddlers had been there for two hours with only minor levels of escaping, so unfortunately not everyone was able to stay for our last minute addition of Katrin Bain discussing realistic ways for mothers to integrate “me time” into their lives. Those of us remaining had an interesting conversation.

After a busy and successful weekend I was happy to relax in the gallery for a few quieter days. My son kept me company with his many toy busses; Emily Williamson from South London Sling Library brought a suitcase full of carriers down for her roving sling surgery and the exhibition closed on Wednesday with the most fabulous Victoria sponge cake I have ever tasted, courtesy of one of the babywearers from the photographs.

It was wonderful to meet and share ideas with so many inspiring people. Many thanks to everyone involved and to The Portico Gallery for having us.

Toddlers in the leaves

The weather has been awful the last few days, bringing an end to one of my favourite times of year for location photography. Luckily before all the beautiful autumn leaves were stripped from the trees I had a few opportunities to take some toddlers into the woods and shoot some portraits. I’m sharing a selection of my favourites so you can remember the golden colours a little longer. Enjoy.
